What it does

Kilohearts describes Bitcrush as a way to simulate lo-fi sound sources, recreating the character of low-quality sampling.

Rate and Bits: downsample the signal (down to 200 Hz) and quantise its amplitude; lower bit values add more distortion.
Converter quality: separate ADC Q and DAC Q settings; lower values add low-frequency and high-frequency aliasing respectively.
Dither and Mix: dither noise to soften quantisation artefacts, plus a dry/wet control.

It's free and works as a normal plugin or as a Snapin in Phase Plant, Multipass and Snap Heap.

When to use it

A simple, free bitcrusher for retro-digital grit on drums, samples, synths and vocals. It has fewer options than the dedicated crushers in the distortion category, but the separate ADC and DAC quality controls give more aliasing character than a plain bit and rate pair. Suits lo-fi hip-hop, chiptune-flavoured and electronic music.
