What it does

XBus is Kiive Audio's VCA bus compressor, drawn from the SSL bus compressor and the Smart Research C2. The developer's aim is compression you "adapt to your mix instead of working around it."

VCA compression: ratio, attack and release in the classic bus style. Attack and release follow stepped SSL-like values, and a Mod button opens up the positions in between.
Headroom: sets how hard the circuit is driven, from clean and open to squashed and saturated.
Sidechain section: high-pass and low-pass filters, a mid-frequency band and a gain setting, so the low end doesn't drive the gain reduction.
Saturation: placed before or after the compressor, with odd or even harmonics and a tone shift control.
Mix: a dry/wet knob for parallel compression without a separate bus.
Channel modes: dual-mono, stereo or mid/side processing.

When to use it

XBus is the budget pick for SSL-style bus glue with more shaping tools than usual. Compared with Cytomic's The Glue, it adds pre/post saturation with harmonic choice and mid/side processing, though The Glue is the longer-proven option. Next to Waves' SSL G-Master Buss Compressor, it gives you a full sidechain filter section, a Headroom drive control and a mix knob, where the Waves plugin keeps closer to the original console layout. Unlike Klanghelm's MJUC, it stays in VCA territory rather than offering vari-mu or tube character. It costs less than most of these.

Genres: all styles, especially pop, rock and hip-hop mixes that want a tight, glued sound.
