V-Comp by Kiive Audio

V-Comp models a seven-tube variable-mu compressor originally designed for broadcast in the 1950s, with an iron-core transformer.

It includes a Deluxe version with mix blend and sidechain HPF, for $89 (regularly $99.99).

Best for: Vocals, Bass, Mix Bus, Mastering. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: tube, vari-mu, transformer, 50s, bass, broadcast, bus processing, mix bus, sidechain input, vocals, full mix, gentle, mixing, musical, gritty, lush, mastering, built-in mix knob, parallel processing, simple, single-band, smooth.

What it does

V-Comp, from Kiive Audio's AudioScape line, recreates a variable-mu compressor "originally designed for broadcast in the 1950s" that later became a studio favorite. The aim is compression that "shapes dynamics naturally rather than clamping down on them."

It has free updates for life. A 14-day, fully working trial needs no card.

When to use it

V-Comp is the pick for gentle, tube-colored leveling with almost no setup. Compared with UA's Fairchild Tube Limiter Collection and Manley Variable Mu, it models a less common 1950s broadcast unit and costs less. Compared with Klanghelm MJUC, it has fewer controls and only three compression modes, so it is quicker but less adjustable. Compared with the Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection, it offers a similar two-knob workflow but with vari-mu tube character and a saturation-only Bypass mode.

What producers say

The one review we read was enthusiastic about its musical, soft-knee sound.
