True Iron
by Kazrog · Saturation · Transformer saturation
vst3s Score 8.4/10 · rated #7 of 10 saturation
True Iron models six classic line transformers, from the UTC 108 X to the Western Electric 111C, for analog warmth and weight on tracks, buses and masters.
A Crush control drives the transformers into saturation, and the plugin is light enough on CPU to run on every channel.
Best for: Mix Bus, Drum Bus, Vocals, Bass, Mastering. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: transformer, bus processing, mix bus, vocals, bass, full mix, enhancement, glue, hardware emulation, heavy, built-in mix knob, subtle, vintage, analog-sounding, classic, CPU-light, drum bus, drums, mastering, mixing, oversampling, parallel processing, resizable UI, single-band, thick, warm.
What it does
True Iron is Kazrog's transformer emulation, developed with producer Devin Powers, that puts "6 vintage outboard transformers" in one plugin. It adds the harmonic saturation and low-end weight of transformer-equipped hardware without any EQ or compression stage.
- Six transformers: models of the UTC 108 X, Malotki E4M-4001B, Western Electric 111C, Haufe V178, Marinair LO1166/A and UTC O-12, each with its own harmonic signature.
- Strength and Crush: Strength sets how nonlinear the transformer behaves; Crush (and Crush 2x) boosts the input by up to +48 dB with auto-compensated gain for heavier saturation.
- DNA mode: an optional, more CPU-hungry frequency-response model based on Devin Powers' individual transformer pairs; Morph adds even-harmonic saturation.
- Mix and impedance: a wet/dry Mix knob for parallel use and selectable Unity or Boost input impedance.
- Workflow: oversampling up to 32x online and offline, a resizable window with black or green themes, and very low CPU use.
The free demo drops to silence at random intervals and disables preset saving.
When to use it
True Iron is narrower than an all-in-one saturator like Soundtoys Decapitator or FabFilter Saturn 2: it has no filters or distortion styles, just transformer color that can stay subtle across a whole mix. Pick it over Softube Saturation Knob or Klanghelm IVGI when you want the specific character of vintage line transformers, and over Black Box Analog Design HG-2 when you want something cheap enough on CPU to put on every track.
- Best for: adding weight and glue to the mix bus, drums, bass and vocals, and thickening sends before reverbs and delays.
- Genres: works in any genre; most useful on rock, pop, country and acoustic mixes that need analog density.
- Look elsewhere if: you want obvious distortion effects or tone shaping; Decapitator or Saturn 2 go much further.
- Standout: six distinct transformer models in one very low-CPU plugin, each with a different harmonic balance.
What producers say
Users and reviewers praise it as a subtle saturation tool they use on nearly everything, with a caveat about its limited bandwidth.
- KVR users (2019) were enthusiastic: one said of all the saturation emulations they had tried, "this one is by far the best, in my opinion"; another called it "the one saturation tool I would happily use on everything."
- Tape Op (2020) found it quick to dial in and quoted F. Reid Shippen: "Sometimes it's meh, and sometimes it's magic." The reviewer used it on vocals, the mix bus and in front of reverbs.
- Gripe: Tape Op noted the plugin's bandwidth tops out around 22 kHz, so processed audio is down 3 dB at 20 kHz, and grew tired of the large skeuomorphic interface.
