What it does

Midnite is a hybrid instrument that builds pads, keys and drones from recorded electric guitars run through granular engines. The developer says it "fuses granular synthesis with analog warmth to create rich, cinematic textures."

The current version is 1.1.0. The developer's store currently lists the Plus edition, and a 7-day trial is available.

When to use it

Midnite is the better pick when you want guitar-flavored atmospheres fast, without designing them from scratch. Compared with Omnisphere 3 and Pigments 7, it is far narrower: one source type and a fixed layer structure instead of deep modulation and many engines, but its presets are tuned for mix-ready pads and drones. Unlike Phase Plant, it is not a modular sound design environment, and it cannot replace a general synth like Serum 2 for basses and leads. Its strength is the recorded guitar character that a wavetable or analog synth does not have.

What producers say

The two reviews found are very positive about the sound design and presets; neither lists real drawbacks.
