What it does
IA-LA1 is a low-control compressor from Initial Audio: there are no ratio, attack or release knobs, because the plugin sets its timing automatically. The developer pitches it as a way to "get perfect compression in less time."
- Threshold: set by dragging an orange line on the input meter rather than turning a knob.
- Automatic timing: attack and release follow the material on their own, so there is nothing to tune.
- Make-up gain: brings the level back up after gain reduction; an input gain control sets the level going in.
- Compress/Limit switch: toggles between a compressor and a harder limiting behaviour.
- THD knob: adds gentle dynamic harmonic distortion for warmth and colour; the compression itself is designed to be transparent.
- Metering: input, output and gain reduction meters.
- Workflow: preset manager, resizable HD interface, low CPU use and low latency.
IA-LA1 is a lifetime license with no subscription, and it was on sale when checked. A free, fully working demo is available.

When to use it
IA-LA1 is the pick when you want a level-and-go compressor for very little money and do not care about modelling hardware. Compared with UAD's Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection and Waves CLA-2A, it borrows the two-control idea of the LA-2A but is not presented as a model of that unit, and it adds a THD knob and a limit switch instead of the tube and opto character. Unlike Pro-C 3, it gives you no attack, release, ratio or knee to set, which makes it faster but much less flexible. Compared with Klanghelm MJUC, another low-cost character compressor, it has fewer tone options but is simpler to set.
- Best for: quick, smooth levelling of vocals, bass and instrument tracks when you just want to set a threshold and move on.
- Genres: any; especially pop, hip-hop and electronic productions on a budget.
- Look elsewhere if: you want the sound of a real LA-2A (Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection or CLA-2A) or full control over timing and sidechain (Pro-C 3).
