GRFX is a real-time granular effect from Imaginando that splits incoming audio into up to 64 grains from an 8-second buffer and scatters them across the stereo field.
A Harmonic Triangle blends grain pitches into chords, and two effect racks, four LFOs and buffer freeze add movement; it costs €49 (about $56).
Best for: Sound Design, Keys & Synths, Vocals, Guitars. Genres: Ambient & Cinematic, Electronic & EDM.
Keywords: granular, freeze, samples & loops, vocals, AUv3/iOS, beta, electric guitar, reverse, A/B compare, bitcrush, bus processing, chorus, cinematic, creative, evolving, flat UI, MIDI-controllable, mixing, parallel processing, phaser, randomize, rent-to-own, sound design, pads, synths, tempo-synced, wet.
What it does
GRFX is Imaginando's real-time granular effect: it "shatters any incoming signal into clouds of tiny grains" that you can reshape, repitch, reverse and scatter across the stereo field. Its signature is a pitch triangle that turns the grains into chords.
- Grain engine: up to 64 grains drawn from a circular buffer of up to 8 seconds, free or tempo-synced, with a freeze button to hold the audio and keep granulating it.
- Grain controls: size from 20 to 1000 ms, frequency and offset, spray (position), warp (timing jitter), stereo spray, reverse-grain probability and a window shape with tilt.
- Harmonic Triangle: three pitch points, each from −12 to +12 semitones; each grain's pitch depends on how close it falls to each point. There are 30+ built-in chords, and a quantize mode or a free mode for microtonal tuning.
- Modulation: four LFOs with six waveforms (sine, square, saw, triangle, sample & hold, filtered S&H), free or synced, with drag-and-drop assignment and cross-modulation.
- Effects: two effect slots, chained or in parallel, with 8 engines: filter, distortion, delay, dual peak EQ, chorus, phaser, bitcrusher and reverb. Probabilistic routing decides which grains go through which chain.
- Built-in space: a stereo delay and a parametric reverb on two independent sends, plus a feedback loop for self-evolving washes.
- Workflow: dual A/B signal paths, MIDI CC control and MIDI clock sync, one-click randomize and 60 factory presets.
GRFX was released in April 2025. The desktop version is sold outright or rent-to-own; it is also in a bundle with DLYM and K7D. The desktop demo never expires, but plays a short noise burst every 60 seconds and cannot save or recall patches. There is a 14-day money-back guarantee.

When to use it
GRFX is the better pick when you want granular textures that stay musical and pitched. Compared with Output's Portal, it has a smaller preset library but costs less and puts chord-based grain pitching up front through the Harmonic Triangle. Its probabilistic routing, which sends different grains through different effect chains, gives it more movement than a single fixed chain. Compared with Graindad, it is less of a glitch tool and more of a harmonic texture generator; next to Infiltrator 2 it is narrower in scope, focused on grains rather than a full effects rack.
- Best for: turning vocals, guitars, pads or loops into harmonised clouds, drones and atmospheres, used on an effect bus or as an insert.
- Genres: ambient, cinematic, experimental and electronic music.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a large library of finished presets (Portal) or a granular synth rather than an effect.
- Tip: switch the triangle to free mode for microtonal tuning, and sync grain size as well as the LFOs to lock textures to the tempo (CDM).
What producers say
Early coverage was very positive, calling it Imaginando's strongest release; user complaints so far concern iOS beta bugs rather than the sound.
- CDM (Peter Kirn, April 2025) called it "the best tool yet" from Imaginando, praising the harmonic triangle, drag-and-drop LFOs, per-grain effects and a clean interface; his only wish was a synth version.
- Loopy Pro forum (iOS beta, May 2025) users called it "absolutely beautiful" and unique, and liked the rhythmic features.
- Criticisms: beta testers reported clipped labels on small iPad screens, AUv3 host detection problems (fixed in a later beta build) and Logic automation issues the developer was investigating.
