Sinphonica Maestosa Strings by IK Multimedia

The first instrument in IK's Sinphonica orchestral line: a 60-piece Italian string orchestra recorded at Officine Meccaniche in Milan, in its own plugin.

Five True Legato styles, Articulation Morphing, eight mic positions and PALCO virtual stage positioning put more of the performance and placement inside the instrument.

Best for: Acoustic Instruments. Genres: Ambient & Cinematic, Jazz, Acoustic & Classical.

Keywords: monophonic, strings, cinematic, ensemble, sample-based, free, drones, leads, round-robin, textures.

What it does

Sinphonica is IK Multimedia's new family of Italian orchestral instruments, and MAESTOSA Strings is its first release. IK says: "Some instruments reproduce an orchestra. Sinphonica® lets you shape one."

60-player ensemble: 16 first violins, 14 second violins, 12 violas, 10 cellos and 8 basses, recorded at Officine Meccaniche in Milan; each section is also sold on its own.
Articulations and legato: more than 40 articulations (about 20 long and 9 short families), up to five dynamic layers and up to six round robins, with five True Legato types: Slur, Glissando, Portamento Slow, Portamento Fast and Runs.
Articulation Morphing: crossfade continuously between two articulations with MIDI CC or velocity, plus drag-and-drop articulation maps and keyswitch presets.
Mics and PALCO: eight mic perspectives (Spot Lead, Close Main, Close Alternative, Decca Stereo, Decca Center, Outriggers, Sides, Conductor) and PALCO, which uses multi-position impulse responses to move sections around a virtual stage.
Cinematic content: ensemble patches for sketching and textures from drones to tension stabs.

The library is available as a full collection or as single sections.

When to use it

Sinphonica Maestosa Strings sets itself apart from established string libraries such as Orchestral Tools Berlin Strings, VSL Synchron Strings Pro, Spitfire's BBC Symphony Orchestra Professional and EastWest Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition with its performance tools: several legato types, articulation morphing and PALCO stage placement in one self-contained plugin, with sections sold individually.

Best for: full-scale cinematic and classical string writing, lyrical legato lines and quick orchestral sketches with the ensemble patches.
Genres: film, TV and game scoring, classical, cinematic pop and trailer music.
Look elsewhere if: you need a full orchestra today or small chamber strings; this first release covers large string sections only.
Standout: Articulation Morphing between playing techniques within a phrase.
