LAAL is a plugin version of the HUM Audio Devices LAAL (Look Ahead Analog Limiter), developed by Brainworx, a mastering limiter built around an analog delay-line detection circuit.
It adds a Dynamic Transient mode, M/S and width controls and a plugin-only transformer drive; it is $49.99, down from $129.
Best for: Mastering, Mix Bus, Drum Bus. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: mastering, transformer, bus processing, look-ahead, mid/side, wide, mix bus, analog-sounding, full mix, creative, drum bus, hardware emulation, metering, mixing, single-band, subscription, true-peak, visual feedback.
What it does
LAAL is Brainworx's emulation of HUM Audio Devices' Look Ahead Analog Limiter, a hardware mastering limiter that detects peaks through a fully analog 0.2 ms delay line. The developer pitches it as "a limiter with life" that gives loudness without brickwall deadness.
- Analog look-ahead: the modelled 0.2 ms delay-line detection circuit reacts to peaks before they pass; in the plugin the delay is compensated, so it responds more immediately than the hardware.
- Dynamic Transient mode: a switch that helps keep transients and their high-frequency detail intact while limiting.
- Release: stepped release times from 2 ms to 100 ms.
- Levels: Input and Output/Ceiling controls, with a gain-reduction meter.
- TX-Drive and Transformer: a transformer button with a TX-Drive control for added colour; TX-Drive is only in the plugin, not on the hardware.
- Stereo tools: M/S processing, a Stereo Width control before the limiter and Detect Link for linking the left and right detection.
- True peak limiting: without soft clipping or artificial RMS manipulation.
Version 1.0 was released on 22 April 2025. A 14-day trial is available, and it is included in the CORE and PRO subscriptions.

When to use it
LAAL is for engineers who want a mastering limiter with analog behaviour and optional transformer colour rather than a toolbox of digital styles. Compared with Pro-L 2, it has one character instead of eight styles and no loudness metering, oversampling options or dithering, but it is quicker to set and adds colour Pro-L 2 doesn't. Unlike Ozone 12 Maximizer, it offers no IRC modes or loudness targets, and it is a stand-alone limiter rather than part of a mastering suite. Next to Elevate, which splits the signal into many bands with adaptive limiting, LAAL is simpler and closer to how a hardware limiter is used. Its built-in M/S and width controls are a plus that most of these alternatives don't offer in the same place.
- Best for: final loudness on masters and the mix bus when you want an analog character and some transformer weight.
- Genres: general-purpose; especially material where you want to keep punch and micro-dynamics while adding level.
- Look elsewhere if: you need detailed loudness metering, several limiting styles or dithering; Pro-L 2 or Ozone 12 Maximizer cover that.
