Keywords: tape, hardware emulation, free, gentle, parallel processing, warm, bass, drums, full mix, glue, oversampling, fat, built-in mix knob, bright, bus processing, mix bus, mixing, modern, single-band, tight, transparent, utility, vintage, vocals.

What it does

TapeLite is HoRNet's free tape saturation plugin, released as a Christmas 2025 gift. It is based on the Otari MX80 and takes a "modern vintage" approach: it models the harmonic distortion, gentle compression and frequency bumps of tape, but leaves out the hiss.

It is free; HoRNet only asks users not to share it.

When to use it

TapeLite is a good pick when you want quick, clean tape warmth for free, without noise or a long list of settings. Compared with the Universal Audio Ampex ATR-102, it models a single machine with only two speeds and no tape formulations, hiss, wow or flutter, but it costs nothing and is far quicker to set up. Unlike RC-20 Retro Color or TAIP, it does not try to sound lo-fi or worn; it aims for glue and gentle saturation. Its Mix knob makes it easy to use in parallel on buses. For heavier colour across several saturation styles, Decapitator goes much further.
