Sybilla Pro
by HoRNet · Vocal Tool · Eight-filter de-esser
Not rated yet
Sybilla Pro is a de-esser with eight tunable detection filters that compresses the whole signal when sibilance is found.
Each filter has its own on/off switch, meter and key listen, and you choose VCA or OPTO compression, for about $24.97.
Best for: Vocals. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: vocals, metering, opto, VCA, dialogue, podcast, corrective, single-band, smooth, built-in mix knob, visual feedback.
What it does
Sybilla Pro is a wideband de-esser with many detection points: when it hears sibilance it "compresses the entire signal" rather than cutting one band. Its relative threshold compares the filtered signal with the full-range signal, so it reacts to sibilance relative to the rest of the voice.
- Detection filters: eight independent filters, each with adjustable centre frequency and gain, a fixed 1 kHz bandwidth and its own on/off switch.
- Relative threshold: detection is set against the unfiltered signal, so changes in overall vocal level affect it less than a fixed threshold.
- Key listen: solo the whole filter bank or a single filter to hear what is being detected.
- Compression modes: VCA (hard knee, fast) or OPTO (soft knee, smooth).
- Timing and mix: adjustable attack and release, plus a dry/wet knob.
- Metering: a meter for each filter and an instantaneous gain-reduction meter with peak hold.
Version 1.2.0 comes with a 15-day money-back guarantee. The demo is fully functional but drops out to silence now and then, cannot save settings and ignores host automation.
When to use it
Sybilla Pro suits voices whose sibilance moves around, because its eight detection filters can cover several problem frequencies at once. Compared with FabFilter Pro-DS, it only works wideband: it turns down the whole signal, where Pro-DS can also process just the high band. Against Oxford SuprEsser and Waves Sibilance it is a much cheaper option, and its several detection points suit voices that one band cannot cover. The choice of VCA and OPTO compression lets it be either quick and firm or smooth and gentle.
- Best for: de-essing vocals and voice-over where sibilance appears at several frequencies.
- Genres: all, plus podcast and voice-over work.
- Look elsewhere if: you want split-band de-essing that only touches the high frequencies (Pro-DS, Oxford SuprEsser).
