Spaces MK2 is a room reverb that uses ray tracing to simulate reflections in a room you design, with set dimensions and wall materials.
You place the source and listener in 3D and can output stereo or binaural audio, for about $22.70.
Best for: Vocals, Acoustic Instruments, Drums, Sound Design. Genres: Ambient & Cinematic, Jazz, Acoustic & Classical.
Keywords: room, spacious, dialogue, cinematic, drums, glassy, macro controls, mixing, sound design, vocals, wide.
What it does
Spaces MK2 is a room reverb that builds the space from its geometry and materials rather than from a list of reverb types: "Don't pick a preset. Design a room." Ray tracing calculates the reflections from what you set.
- Room size: width, length and height in metres, plus a Remove Ceiling option for open-air or semi-open spaces.
- Wall materials: each of the six surfaces has its own low- and high-frequency reflection and diffusion settings, so you can model glass, curtains, concrete and the like.
- Source placement: left and right speaker positions in X, Y and Z, so sources can sit independently in the same room.
- Listener placement: move the mic or listener position to change distance and how the room is heard.
- Output modes: Stereo for monitors, or Binaural using head-related transfer functions (HRTF) for headphones.
- Macro controls and presets: global Reflections, Diffusion and Dry/Wet controls, and save/load of room setups.
A demo is available and a 15-day money-back guarantee applies. Owners of the first Spaces can upgrade.
When to use it
Spaces MK2 is the better pick when you want to place a dry source in a believable, specific room rather than dial in a classic reverb sound. Compared with Valhalla Room or FabFilter Pro-R 2, which give you a finished algorithm to shape with decay and tone controls, it asks you to set room dimensions, wall materials and positions, which is slower but more literal. Unlike LiquidSonics Cinematic Rooms Professional, it does not aim for lush, long tails, and it is much cheaper. Its binaural HRTF output mode also makes it useful for headphone-first work.
- Best for: placing dry recordings in a believable room, matching spaces for dialogue and acoustic instruments, and binaural or headphone mixes.
- Genres: acoustic, orchestral, cinematic, and podcast or audio drama work.
- Look elsewhere if: you want lush, long creative reverbs (Valhalla VintageVerb, Supermassive) or classic hall and plate sounds (Seventh Heaven Professional).
