What it does
MBC is HoRNet's four-band "automatic multi band compressor". Each band can compress or expand, and global auto functions read the incoming signal and set the main compression parameters for you.
- Four bands: four independent frequency bands split by three adjustable crossovers, each with its own compression settings.
- Compress or expand: every band can switch to expansion, so you can push down a boomy low end and lift a dull top band in the same instance.
- Stereo or M/S: choose stereo or mid/side processing per band, for example to compress the sides of the upper bands while leaving the centre alone.
- Auto functions: global automatic attack/release, ratio and threshold that adapt to the incoming signal per band, to cut down on manual tweaking.
- Gain and comparison: linkable input and output gain to keep loudness consistent, plus a bypass button for A/B checks.
- Display: graphs of each band's level and the amount of compression or expansion in real time.
- Quality: up to 4x oversampling to keep aliasing low on high-frequency content.
MBC was released in December 2023; the current version is 1.0.4. The vector interface scales to the screen and has light and dark modes. The demo is fully functional, but it goes silent now and then, cannot save settings and ignores host automation.
When to use it
MBC is a budget multiband compressor for people who want help with the settings rather than a deep editor. Compared with FabFilter Pro-MB and Waves C6 Multiband Compressor, it is less flexible, with a fixed four bands, but it costs much less and its auto attack/release, ratio and threshold get you to a working setting quickly. Its per-band switch between compression and expansion and per-band stereo or mid/side mode cover most everyday multiband jobs. Unlike TDR Kotelnikov or Pro-C 3, which are single-band, it can treat the low end and the top separately, which is the main reason to reach for it.
- Best for: taming boomy bass and harsh upper mids on mix buses, masters and vocals, and mid/side control of a wide mix.
- Genres: all.
- Look elsewhere if: you need more than four bands, dynamic EQ-style bands or detailed sidechain routing; Pro-MB is more flexible.
