Harmonics Pro by HoRNet

Harmonics Pro is an exciter, saturator and clipper that lets you set the amplitude and phase of up to ten individual harmonics.

Pre- and de-emphasis EQ, hysteresis for transformer, tube and tape behavior, and a soft clipper complete it. It costs €10.99 (about $12.48); HoRNet also offers a free, simpler Harmonics plugin.

Best for: Vocals, Drums, Bass, Keys & Synths, Mix Bus. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: enhancement, exciter, bass, drums, parallel processing, soft clip, tape, transformer, tube, vocals, harmonic enhancer, auto-gain, bus processing, finishing touch, flat UI, full mix, mix bus, mixing, oversampling, resizable UI, simple, single-band, spacious, subtle, warm.

What it does

Harmonics Pro is an exciter and saturator that builds distortion one harmonic at a time, giving control over the "depth, warmth, and character" of the result. It is the paid big brother of HoRNet's free Harmonics waveshaper, with emphasis EQ, hysteresis and a clipper added around the harmonic engine.

The current version is 1.0.1. The demo is fully functional but silences now and then, does not save settings and ignores automation, and a 15-day money-back guarantee applies.

When to use it

Harmonics Pro is the better pick when you want to decide exactly which harmonics are added, rather than choose a drive style and listen. Compared with Soundtoys Decapitator, it has no hardware-modelled characters to pick from and takes longer to set up, but it lets you set the level and phase of each of 10 harmonics and EQ the signal before and after. It is far more detailed than Softube Saturation Knob, which offers one drive control and three modes, and it does not attempt the noise, wobble and lo-fi colour of XLN RC-20 Retro Color. It costs much less than any of the paid options here.
