FilterSolo
by HoRNet · Filter · Resonant multimode filter with modulation
Not rated yet
FilterSolo is a resonant digital filter with low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-stop modes at 12 or 24 dB/oct, plus analog saturation and hiss.
Two envelope followers and two tempo-synced LFOs can push cutoff and resonance in either direction. It costs €17.90 (about $20.33).
Best for: Keys & Synths, Drums, Guitars, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Hip-Hop & Trap, Lo-Fi.
Keywords: tempo-synced, analog-sounding, drums, rhythmic, electric guitar, bass, hardware emulation, lo-fi, mixing, modulation matrix, sound design.
What it does
FilterSolo is HoRNet's single multimode filter effect, which the developer describes as "a resonant filter with a variety of modulation possibilities and analog emulation." It is built for sweeps, auto-wah and rhythmic movement rather than corrective filtering.
- Filter modes: low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-stop.
- Slopes and range: 12 or 24 dB/oct, with cutoff from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and a resonance control that can emphasise the peak.
- Envelope followers: two, each with attack and release from 10 ms to 1 s, for level-driven sweeps and auto-wah.
- LFOs: two, tempo-syncable, each with four waveforms.
- Modulation: envelopes and LFOs can push cutoff and resonance up or down (positive or negative amounts).
- Analog character: saturation and hiss that can be switched off separately.
- Display: a large LCD-style screen showing cutoff, resonance and LFO settings.
The current macOS version is 1.2.0; KVR lists version 1.1.3 for Windows. The demo silences now and then and does not save settings or respond to automation.
When to use it
FilterSolo is a cheap single-filter effect with enough modulation for most sweep and wah jobs. Compared with Soundtoys FilterFreak it covers similar ground, an analog-style resonant filter driven by LFOs and envelope followers, at a fraction of the price, but without its extra rhythm and character options. Next to FabFilter Volcano 3 it has one filter instead of several, and no flexible routing or modulation matrix. It is more of a general modulated filter than Cytomic The Drop, which focuses on detailed analog filter models.
- Best for: filter sweeps, envelope-driven wah on drums, bass or guitar, and tempo-synced rhythmic movement.
- Genres: electronic, hip-hop and lo-fi.
- Look elsewhere if: you want several filters with flexible routing (Volcano 3), or deep rhythmic filter sequencing (Sugar Bytes WOW2).
