ElliptiQ
by HoRNet · Imaging · Elliptical EQ for low-end stereo width
Not rated yet
ElliptiQ is an elliptical EQ that narrows the stereo width of low frequencies while leaving the mid signal intact, for vinyl mastering and bass-heavy mixes.
A cutoff from 20 to 2,000 Hz, three slopes, an Auto Width mode and a seven-band correlation meter cover the job. It costs €7.99 (about $9.07).
Best for: Mastering, Mix Bus, Bass. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Hip-Hop & Trap.
Keywords: wide, bass, mastering, metering, vinyl, tight, full mix, heavy, mid/side, bus processing, gentle, keys, kick, lead vocals, mix bus, mixing, modern, pads, sub bass, vocals.
What it does
ElliptiQ is a small mid/side tool from HoRNet whose one job is to narrow the stereo width of the low end while leaving the Mid signal untouched. The idea comes from vinyl mastering, where out-of-phase bass can make the needle jump, but the developer pitches it just as much at modern mixes that need "tight, focused" bass.
- Elliptic filter: a low-shelf, Butterworth-style filter on the Side channel, with the cutoff set anywhere from 20 to 2,000 Hz.
- Slopes: 12, 24 or 48 dB/oct, from a gentle blend to a steep split between mono lows and wide highs.
- Width: sets the stereo width below the cutoff, from 100% (untouched) down to full mono.
- Auto Width: watches the signal continuously and adjusts the low-end width in real time, instead of a fixed setting.
- Correlation metering: a correlation meter split into seven frequency bands, so you can see where phase problems sit and check the result.
- Mid/side processing: only the Side component is filtered, so the centre of the mix (kick, bass, lead vocal) keeps its level and tone.
The current version is 1.1.0. The demo is fully functional but silences now and then, does not save settings with the session and ignores host automation, and purchases carry a 15-day money-back guarantee.
When to use it
ElliptiQ is the pick when the only goal is a mono-safe low end and you want a cheap, single-purpose tool to get it. Compared with iZotope Ozone Imager, it handles just one band below a cutoff and cannot widen anything, but it adds Auto Width and a seven-band correlation meter aimed squarely at bass phase. Unlike bx_stereomaker or Polyverse Wider, it does not create width from mono material; it only takes width away. Its steep 48 dB/oct slope gives a sharper split between mono lows and wide highs than a gentle shelf would, which helps on wide synth basses.
- Best for: pre-mastering for vinyl, tightening sub bass and kick in wide electronic mixes, and checking stereo pads and keyboards for phasey lows.
- Genres: electronic, hip-hop, rock and pop, and any bass-heavy style.
- Look elsewhere if: you also want to widen the mids and highs or treat several bands; Ozone Imager does both.
