Cassette644 by HoRNet

Cassette644 emulates a vintage 4-track cassette recorder, with Type I, II and IV tape, two tape speeds and a three-band semi-parametric EQ.

The EQ can sit before or after the tape stage, hiss can be switched per module, and instances can be linked. It costs €16.99 (about $19.29).

Best for: Drums, Keys & Synths, Guitars, Vocals, Mix Bus. Genres: Lo-Fi, Rock & Indie, Hip-Hop & Trap, Pop.

Keywords: cassette, hardware emulation, tape, vintage, vocals, lo-fi, drums, electric guitar, keys, metering, 80s, bus processing, full mix, mix bus, mixing, oversampling, single-band, warm.

What it does

Cassette644 is HoRNet's emulation of a vintage 4-track cassette recorder, the kind of portastudio machine behind many home-recorded demos. Rather than a wobble effect, it models the recorder as a whole: the tape stage plus the channel EQ, with the idea of building a "virtual cassette multitrack" across a session.

The current version is 1.0.3. The demo silences now and then, doesn't save settings and doesn't respond to host automation.

When to use it

Cassette644 is the pick when you want the coloration of a home 4-track recorder across a whole session at a very low price. Compared with RC-20 Retro Color or SketchCassette II, it offers little in the way of wow, flutter, dropouts and degradation; instead it focuses on tape type, speed and the channel EQ, which suits subtle recorder colour on many tracks. Its Link switch keeps every instance on the same settings, so it works as a session-wide tape stage rather than a single-track effect. Next to the Ampex ATR-102, it is a much cheaper, rougher consumer-tape flavour rather than a studio mastering machine. For heavy saturation and drive, Decapitator goes much further.
