Colour Delay by HOFA

Colour Delay is HOFA's creative delay with four combinable styles: Tape, Bucket Brigade, Digital and Destruction.

Five post-delay effects (Diffusion, Phaser, Chorus, Auto Pan, Ducker) and feedback up to 150% for self-oscillation round it out, for €109 (about $124).

Best for: Vocals, Guitars, Keys & Synths, Sound Design. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: ducking, creative, BBD, simple, tape, lo-fi, vocals, chorus, phaser, classic, dub, electric guitar, synths, built-in analyzer, dark, destructive, digital classic, digital delay, flutter, gritty, heavy, mixing, ping-pong, sound design, tempo-synced, tube, warm, wobble.

What it does

Colour Delay chains four classic delay characters in one plugin and lets you reorder them by drag and drop. HOFA's idea is to put "all the iconic delay sounds" in a single, simple interface.

When to use it

Colour Delay is the better pick when you want to stack tape, BBD, digital and distorted echo characters in one chain, with ducking and diffusion already on board. Compared with EchoBoy it has far fewer modeled styles and no groove or multi-tap Rhythm mode, but combining the characters is quicker and its EQ display is more visual. Against ValhallaDelay it offers less modulation depth and fewer modes, at a higher price. Unlike FabFilter Timeless 3, it has no modulation routing system; its strength is simple, fast character delays.

What producers say

Early reviews are clearly positive, with praise for the simple workflow and the vintage character; user reviews are still scarce.
