What it does
TimeVerb-X puts two reverbs in one plugin: GSi's Type4 spring reverb, first released in 2008 and based on an Accutronics type 4 tank, and a new algorithmic digital reverb. The two can be blended or chained.
- Spring reverb: a Type 4 tank emulation with a feedback control that can push it into self-oscillation, and a stereo width knob.
- Digital reverb: pre-delay, early reflections and room size.
- Routing: run the two reverbs in parallel or in series, for different characters.
- Programs: 128 built-in programs, with import and export of programs and banks.
- MIDI Learn: with custom map import and export.
- Help: tooltips and value readouts built in.
The current version is 1.0.2. An audio demo is on the developer's page; the sources don't mention a trial.
When to use it
TimeVerb-X is the pick when you want a real spring sound with a simple digital room in the same plugin. Compared with Valhalla VintageVerb or FabFilter Pro-R 2, it has far fewer algorithms and much less control, but neither of those models a spring tank. Valhalla Room gives more realistic rooms; TimeVerb-X's digital side is a basic room for blending. Its self-oscillating spring feedback also makes it a sound-design tool that the cleaner rated reverbs aren't.
- Best for: spring reverb on guitars, organ and keys, blended with or fed into a digital room.
- Genres: rock, surf, dub, lo-fi and cinematic.
- Look elsewhere if: you want many reverb algorithms and deep control; VintageVerb or Pro-R 2 fit better.
What producers say
Users of the iOS version like its lush, sometimes strange spring sound.
- Loopy Pro forum users said it "sounds excellent", praised the feedback control, and one called it possibly their favourite spring reverb on iOS, "really lush and can get weird".
- Criticisms: one user reported a "Bad Signal" error in AUM, possibly linked to high feedback.
