What it does
Easy Convolver is a free, bare-bones convolution plugin from GSi (Genuine Soundware): load a WAV file and it convolves your signal with it. GSi pitches it as "quick and easy convolution" for impulse responses of reverbs, amps, filters or other gear.
- Any WAV as an IR: reverb spaces, guitar amps and cabinets, filters or other hardware captures all load the same way.
- Drag and drop: drop a .wav file onto the plugin or load it manually from disk.
- Wet/dry knob: a single mix knob blends the convolved signal (left) with the dry signal (right); there are no decay, EQ or pre-delay controls.
- File memory: the plugin remembers up to 100 recently used impulse files for quick recall.
- Sample IRs: a set of sample impulse files comes in the download to get started.
- Fast engine: built on the FFTConvolver library by HiFi-LoFi and uses threads for processing speed.
The current version is 1.0.0. It is free, and GSi asks for an optional donation.
When to use it
Easy Convolver is the pick when you already have impulse responses and just want to run audio through them at no cost. Compared with FabFilter Pro-R 2 or Valhalla VintageVerb, it has no algorithm of its own: the sound depends entirely on the IR you load, and the only control is wet/dry. Seventh Heaven Professional is built on Bricasti captures but plays its own fixed set of spaces, while Easy Convolver loads any WAV, including amp, cab and gear IRs. Against a full convolution reverb such as Altiverb, it lacks IR editing and a library browser, but it costs nothing.
- Best for: trying out your own reverb, cabinet or hardware impulse responses for free.
- Genres: any.
- Look elsewhere if: you want to trim, stretch or EQ the IR; a full convolution reverb such as Altiverb fits better, and Pro-R 2 suits reverb you shape with controls.
What producers say
Coverage is light; it is treated as a handy free utility rather than a reverb in its own right.
- Bedroom Producers Blog called convolvers "easy to overlook" but handy for sampled churches, amps and analog gear, and liked the 100-file memory.
- Limits: BPB noted the basic interface and the wet/dry-only control set.
