What it does

Skein is an FM synthesizer from Glitchmachines focused on experimental sound design rather than emulating classic FM instruments.

FM engine: four operator modules with skew and noise generators, an FM modulation matrix with per-cell modulation, and eight user-definable algorithm presets.
Modulation: four LFOs (15 waveforms), four sequencers of up to 32 steps, four multimode envelopes and randomizers.
Filters and effects: two multimode filters and four multi-effects slots (distortion, bit crusher, chorus, phaser, delay, reverb, buffer effects).
Playing: 12-voice polyphonic or monophonic mode with glide, and 160 presets in four banks.

When to use it

Skein is a modern, modulation-heavy FM synth for unusual timbres rather than DX-style electric pianos and bells.

Best for: metallic, evolving and glitchy sounds, sound effects and experimental basses and leads.
Look elsewhere if: you want a faithful classic FM emulation.
