What it does

OB-E recreates the Oberheim 8-Voice, the 1970s polysynth built from eight SEM modules, and lets you edit each of those eight voices on its own. It carries Tom Oberheim's personal endorsement, and version 2 was refined with him and former Oberheim engineer Marcus Ryle.

The current version is 2.6. The free trial runs for 6 hours or 7 days, whichever is longer, with the Alpha patches only. It includes a free licence for the simpler OB-EZ.

When to use it

OB-E is the pick when you want the 8-Voice specifically: eight separate SEMs you can detune and voice individually, for wide, slightly unstable Oberheim pads and brass. Compared with Arturia OB-Xa V or OB-Xd, which model the later OB-X polys, it gives you per-voice SEM editing and the earlier, looser modular sound. Next to Diva, it covers one classic instrument rather than many, but goes much deeper into that one sound. It also costs more than GForce's own single-voice SEM, which shares its patches, so choose the SEM if you only need mono bass and leads.

What producers say

Reviewers and users rate it at the top of the scale for sound, with price the main reservation.
