VPRE-72 is a free emulation of the V72 tube preamp from the early 1950s, with input and output transformers, dual EF804s pentodes and the output choke modeled.

It adds gain-compensated drive, V76-style low and high cut filters and instance grouping, and has no copy protection.

What it does

VPRE-72 is a free model of the V72, a German tube preamp from the early 1950s built by brands such as Maihak, TAB, Siemens and TFK. Fuse Audio Labs also drew on the related V76 and REDD.47 designs to give it filters and extra gain staging.

When to use it

VPRE-72 is the pick for free German tube warmth with a few tone-shaping filters. Like Softube Saturation Knob it costs nothing, but it models a specific tube circuit and adds filters, trim and a VU meter rather than a single knob. Compared with Soundtoys Decapitator it has one flavour of saturation and no aggressive distortion modes, so it suits gentle color more than heavy drive. Universal Audio's V76 Preamplifier and Arturia Pre V76 model the related V76; VPRE-72 gives a similar kind of sound for free. For transformer-only color with a choice of units, Kazrog True Iron goes further.

What producers say

Coverage sees it as a simple, good-sounding freebie rather than a game changer.
