What it does
VPRE-31A emulates a rare 1960s four-transistor germanium preamp, completed with a custom UTC input transformer. It is a simple colour box for even-harmonic saturation with a strong, round low end.
- Drive: fully gain-compensated, so you can push the saturation without level jumps.
- Impedance: a setting that changes the input loading and with it the frequency response.
- Output level: sets the final gain.
- Noise: adds vintage hiss for character and texture, with an adjustable level.
- Link: ties multiple instances together, handy on stereo pairs and groups, as HomeStudioToday notes.
- Tone: even-harmonic germanium saturation, warmth and a slight top-end roll-off.
The current version is 2.7.

When to use it
VPRE-31A is the pick for a subtle, warm germanium preamp colour at a low price and very low CPU, so it can go on many channels. Compared with Soundtoys Decapitator, it is much gentler and has fewer tone controls, with no Punish or style switches for heavy distortion. Next to the Black Box Analog Design HG-2, it is a single-colour preamp rather than a mix-bus saturator with tube stages and parallel blend. It is closer in spirit to Softube's Saturation Knob: few controls, but a more specific vintage voice.
- Best for: warming up vocals, acoustic guitars, bass and drums, on single tracks or across a whole session.
- Genres: any style, especially rock, folk, soul and vintage-leaning pop.
- Look elsewhere if: you want obvious distortion or more tone shaping (Decapitator), or EQ and compression in the same plugin.
- Tip: HomeStudioToday suggests 600 ohms impedance with noise around -85 dB for a vintage feel, and using Link on stereo sources.
What producers say
The one hands-on review we found is very positive, with subtlety the only caveat.
- HomeStudioToday gave it 5 out of 5, praising the drive as "pleasantly subtle and usable throughout the dial", the warmth and sparkle it adds, and CPU use of about 0.8%.
- Criticisms: the same review noted beginners may find the effect a bit subtle.
