VCL-515 by Fuse Audio Labs

VCL-515 emulates a rare 1960s push-pull feedback tube limiter made for US broadcast use, with a soft-knee, vari-mu-style curve.

It has variable attack, release and sidechain filter, a mode switch to use only the tube saturation, and a mix stage, for $59.

Best for: Vocals, Mix Bus, Bass, Drum Bus. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: tube, 60s, bus processing, sidechain input, mixing, vari-mu, bass, broadcast, gentle, hardware emulation, mix bus, vocals, metering, smooth, acoustic guitar, drum bus, enhancement, full mix, inspired by, built-in mix knob, modern, parallel processing, single-band, thick, vintage, visual feedback.

What it does

VCL-515 emulates "a very rare and remarkable tube limiter from the 1960s" built for broadcast use. It combines soft vari-mu compression with tube saturation, and adds modern controls the original never had.

The current version is 2.7.

When to use it

VCL-515 is the better pick when you want vintage tube compression but also want to set the timing yourself. Compared with the Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection it adds variable attack and release and a sidechain filter, and its Amplifier mode turns it into a saturator. Its sibling VCL-25A offers only switchable release times, so VCL-515 is the more flexible of the two Fuse vari-mu units. Compared with a clean digital design like FabFilter Pro-C 3, it gives up precision and metering for colour.

What producers say

The one hands-on review found gave it full marks, praising its character and dual use as limiter and saturator.
