Best for: Drums, Keys & Synths, Vocals, Guitars, Mix Bus. Genres: Lo-Fi, Hip-Hop & Trap, Rock & Indie.

Keywords: cassette, hardware emulation, lo-fi, tape, 90s, classic, drums, full mix, vintage, vocals, CPU-light, electric guitar, gritty, keys, 80s, bus processing, mix bus, mixing, repair, single-band, subtle.

What it does

TCS-68 recreates one channel of "one of the most iconic cassette tape based 8-track recorders," a cassette multitrack introduced in 1990 with a 10-channel mixer, 3-band EQ and noise reduction. Fuse Audio Labs' aim is to bring that home-studio sound into the DAW, with each stage of the channel modelled.

The current version is 2.7. It has often been on sale for much less.

When to use it

TCS-68 is the pick when you want the sound of one specific home cassette multitrack, applied like a channel strip across a mix. Compared with XLN Audio RC-20 Retro Color, it has far fewer creative degradation effects, but its preamp, tape and EQ stages give a more focused, believable 1990s demo-tape colour. Compared with the Ampex ATR-102 Mastering Tape Recorder, it is lo-fi by design rather than a high-end master machine, and much cheaper. It is also lighter on CPU than many tape plugins, so it can sit on every channel instead of only the mix bus.

What producers say

Reviewers and users like it as an affordable way to add cassette grit, while noting it is about character rather than fidelity.
