FBVC by Full Bucket Music

FBVC is a free emulation of the KORG VC-10 vocoder from 1978, a 20-band stereo vocoder with a built-in 64-voice tone generator as the carrier.

It adds accent bending, vibrato and a tweakable ensemble effect, can play a WAV file as the modulator, and is free.

Best for: Vocals, Keys & Synths, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Pop.

Keywords: free, hardware emulation, 70s, vocals, synths, keys, simple, beginner-friendly, metering, MIDI-controllable, VCA, advanced, CPU-light, drums, external sidechain, gentle, mixing, resizable UI, samples & loops, sound design, pads.

What it does

FBVC is a free software version of KORG's VC-10, a 1978 vocoder keyboard with its own tone generator. It runs as an effect: feed it a voice or other modulator and play the carrier from MIDI.

The current version is 1.1.3 (24 Nov 2024). It is a free download; the developer accepts donations.

When to use it

FBVC is the pick for a free, characterful vintage vocoder with its own carrier, so no extra synth or sidechain routing is needed to get started. Compared with Nectar 4, which corrects and polishes vocals, it is a pure effect for robot and talking-synth sounds. Unlike Abbey Road Reel ADT, which thickens a voice and keeps it natural, FBVC replaces the voice's tone with the carrier. Its simple sawtooth carrier and fixed 20-band design give a classic late-70s sound but fewer options than a modern vocoder with selectable carriers and band counts.

What producers say

Coverage is light, but the main write-up found it easy to use and gentle on CPU.
