What it does
Junior is a 4-bit wavetable synth inspired by the Game Boy and tracker music. Fors calls it "the perfect lo-bit playground", built around a tiny wave buffer you can twist on the fly.
- 4-bit wave oscillator: plays a custom wave buffer of 32 4-bit values, which the sound-shaping controls transform; you can draw your own waveform in the interface.
- Noise generator: a 7-bit LFSR noise source that pairs with the oscillator.
- Filter: a built-in filter with cutoff and resonance.
- Modulation tables: four tracker-style tables of 16 steps each, usable as LFOs, envelopes, arpeggiators or MIDI input mappers.
- Performance: a chip-style arpeggiator, portamento, stereo 2-voice unison and up to 16-voice polyphony.
- Expression and tuning: MPE continuous pitch bend, CLAP Note Expressions and ODDSound MTS-ESP for alternative tunings.
- Presets and themes: a random preset generator and a theme creator for custom colours.
- Junior-Lite: a free edition with the core wave oscillator and one modulation table, without noise, unison, arpeggiator, portamento, polyphony or themes.
Junior-Lite works as a free way to try the engine.
When to use it
Junior is the better pick when you want authentic lo-bit sound with a tracker-like way of working. Compared with Vital and Serum 2, its tables are deliberately crude 32-sample, 4-bit waves rather than smooth high-resolution ones, and its step tables replace their envelope and LFO drawing. It covers far less ground than either, but it gets to Game Boy-style leads and arps in seconds. Unlike Hive 2 or Sylenth1 it has no conventional effects-heavy layout, and it is cheaper than both.
- Best for: chiptune leads, chip arpeggios, gritty basses and video game sounds.
- Genres: chiptune, electronic, lo-fi and hip-hop.
- Look elsewhere if: you want clean, modern wavetable sound and deep modulation (Vital or Serum 2).
What producers say
Early coverage is enthusiastic about its unusual take on wavetable synthesis; full reviews are still scarce.
- Synth Anatomy called it a "fresh approach" and a "very unique wavetable concept", and said fans of retro Game Boy sounds "will find it hard to resist".
- Note: this was a first-look article at launch, not a long-term test.
