Slew Over by Florian Mrugalla

Slew Over is a free slew limiter from Florian Mrugalla that caps how fast the waveform can change, set in pitch or Hz, with low-pass or high-pass modes and optional 2x oversampling.

It is free and open source (GPL 3), as VST3 for Windows.

Best for: Keys & Synths, Bass, Drums, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Lo-Fi.

Keywords: free, open source, oversampling, bass, drums, sound design, synths, harsh, lo-fi, mixing, simple, spectral.

What it does

Slew Over is a small free slew limiter, described as "a simple slew limiter with oversampling." A slew limiter caps how fast the signal can change, which acts like a filter whose effect depends on level, so it sits between filtering and distortion. The developer made it while analysing the spectral response of slew limiters.

Version 1.0 is free and open source under the GPL 3 license; the source is on GitHub.

When to use it

Slew Over is for when you want to soften or brighten a sound in a nonlinear way that reacts to level, which a normal filter does not do. Compared with Volcano 3 or FilterFreak, it has no modulation, resonance or multiple filter shapes, just one slew control and a low-pass or high-pass switch, but it costs nothing and gives a different, slightly distorted character. Louder, faster-moving material is affected more, so it can tame harsh transients or edgy synths differently from an EQ. It is an experimental tool rather than a full filter.
