Pro-C 3
by FabFilter · Compressor · Digital, multi-style
vst3s Score 9.6/10 · rated #1 of 10 compressors
FabFilter's flagship compressor, released in January 2026. It adds six new styles (Versatile, Smooth, Vari-Mu, Op-El, Upward and TTM) to the eight carried over from Pro-C 2, for fourteen in total, so one plugin can move from transparent mastering control to opto warmth to obvious pumping.
New Character modes (Tube, Diode, Bright) add saturation and analog drift before or after compression. The side-chain EQ now takes up to six bands, oversampling goes to 32x, and immersive formats up to 9.1.6 are supported. The level and knee displays remain the clearest way to see what a compressor is doing.
Best for: Vocals, Drums, Bass, Mix Bus, Mastering. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: hybrid topology, mastering, transparent, drums, opto, vari-mu, vocals, bus processing, mix bus, oversampling, pumping, sidechain input, tube, vintage, auto-gain, bass, clean, digital, full mix, analog-sounding, heavy, inspired by, look-ahead, metering, mid/side, built-in mix knob, mixing, original design, single-band, tempo-synced, visual feedback, warm.
What it does
Pro-C 3 is FabFilter's all-purpose compressor. Rather than copying one piece of hardware, it offers 14 compression styles, from clean and transparent to vintage-flavoured.
- New styles in version 3: Versatile, Smooth, Vari-Mu, Op-El (an optical, LA-2A-like response), Upward and TTM ("To The Max"), alongside eight styles carried over from Pro-C 2.
- Character modes: Tube, Diode and Bright add analog-style saturation with a Drive control, placed before or after the compression.
- Detailed controls: variable knee, Auto Threshold, program-dependent attack and release with Auto Release, Auto Gain, hold, up to 20 ms of lookahead, a Mix control, and a Range limit on how much the gain can change.
- Side-chain: its own six-band EQ using Pro-Q filter shapes; external, MIDI or tempo-synced pulse triggering; variable stereo and mid/side linking.
- Extras: up to 32x oversampling, Dolby Atmos support, a large animated level and knee display with loudness metering, and it appears in Pro-Q 4's Instance List.

When to use it
Pro-C 3 is the pick when you want one compressor that can do nearly everything and show you exactly what it's doing. Its range of styles lets it stand in for opto, vari-mu or aggressive pumping compressors, so many engineers use it in place of several vintage emulations.
- Best for: mastering, vocals, drum buses and the mix bus, where its visual feedback and precise controls pay off.
- Genres: electronic, pop and immersive (Atmos) mixes; the cleaner styles also suit jazz, orchestral and acoustic recordings.
- Look elsewhere if: you want the sound of one specific vintage unit and nothing else. A dedicated 1176 or LA-2A emulation is more direct.
What producers say
Reviews are strongly positive.
- Sound On Sound called it supremely versatile, from invisible gain reduction to slamming vintage pumping.
- Production Expert's panel gave it a Gold Award after using it on vocals, DI bass, drum buses and an Atmos EDM mix; one panellist called Auto Gain "seriously liberating".
- MusicTech praised the workflow improvements but noted the price is high for a compressor alone.
- How producers use it: replacing a stack of plugins with the built-in saturation, and pairing it with Pro-Q 4 through the Instance List.
- Gripes: little visual feedback for Auto Threshold and TTM, and a side-chain EQ that can't be bypassed as a whole.
