What it does

Eventide's recreation of the Omnipressor, a dynamics processor from the early 1970s that it describes as the first of its kind.

Function control: sets the ratio continuously, from expansion through to infinite compression.
Dynamic reversal: inverts the envelope so loud passages get quieter and quiet ones get louder.
Controls: variable attack and release, gain/attenuation, a bass-cut switch and a side-chain input.
Presets: dozens of factory presets to start from.

When to use it

A special-effect dynamics tool rather than a general-purpose compressor. The reversal and extreme expansion settings do things a standard compressor such as the CLA-76 or Pro-C 3 can't, like turning drum hits into swells or squashing a sound flat.

Best for: extreme drum and bass processing, ducking-style effects via the side-chain, and creative sound design.
Genres: rock, experimental, electronic and anything that wants unusual dynamics.
Look elsewhere if: you want gentle levelling or glue; a conventional compressor is easier.
