What it does

DeeSpeaker is a free monitor simulator from Dotec-Audio for mixing on headphones. The developer says it "simulates near-field speaker" placement at 45 degrees and 1 m from the listener.

When to use it

DeeSpeaker is the simplest way to hear a headphone mix with a speaker-like stereo image: put it on the master bus, switch it on and listen. Unlike REFERENCE 3 or Metric AB, it does not compare your mix with reference tracks; it changes how you hear your own mix. Compared with paid headphone tools such as dSONIQ Realphones or Sonarworks SoundID Reference, it has no headphone correction profiles and no choice of rooms or speakers, and nothing to adjust. In return it is free and costs almost no CPU. It should be removed or bypassed before export, since it colours the master output.

What producers say

Listeners find it moves a headphone mix closer to speakers, though not all the way.
