What it does

DeeMute is a free plugin from Dotec-Audio that "can mute (or invert) audio triggered by MIDI notes". You place it on an audio track and play or draw MIDI notes into it, so the notes decide when the sound is cut, which gives gate, stutter and ducking effects.

Version 1.2.1 (13 January 2026) follows 1.2.0 (June 2025), 1.1.0 (September 2024) and the first release in August 2022. It is a free download.

When to use it

DeeMute is the pick when you want MIDI notes to control a gate or stutter directly. Compared with LFO Tool and Duck 2, it has no drawn volume curves or tempo-synced envelopes, but it follows whatever rhythm you program in MIDI, which makes irregular patterns and fills easy. Unlike Kickstart 2, it isn't a one-knob sidechain pump; you set the timing yourself with notes and the attack and release controls. ShaperBox 3 does far more (multiband shaping, filters and many effects) but costs money, while DeeMute is free and very simple.

What producers say
