Multiplicity is a multiband compressor from DMG Audio that also works as a dynamic EQ.

It is a flexible multiband dynamics tool for mixing and mastering, and costs about $232 (£175).

What it does

Multiplicity is DMG Audio's multiband dynamics processor for mastering, combining multiband compression and expansion with dynamic EQ in one plugin. It is built around linear-phase band splitting that DMG describes as "bit-transparent".

Up to 8 bands: each band can be a crossover band (Xover) or a Pre or Post dynamic EQ band, so you can split the spectrum or target one problem area and leave the rest untouched.
Dynamics modes: compression, expansion and gating, with ratios above and below the threshold and independent floor and ceiling settings.
Two-stage dynamics: each band separates transient handling from slower dynamics, so it can also act as a transient shaper or de-esser.
Sidechain: an external sidechain input, a 3-band sidechain EQ per band, configurable RMS detection and crest factor, and per-band lookahead.
Stereo: full L/R and M/S linking, with each band able to target left, right, mid or side.
Gain staging: global and per-band gain, plus per-band dry gain for parallel processing and an adjustable dynamics character per band.
Metering and presets: a spectrum analyzer for setting crossovers, per-band dynamics and sidechain EQ graphs, zoomable PPM and gain-reduction meters, and 8 A/B banks with whole-instance and per-band presets.

When to use it

Multiplicity is the pick for mastering engineers who want deep, transparent multiband control and are willing to learn it. Compared with FabFilter Pro-MB it is less immediate to set up, but it adds a separate transient stage per band, per-band sidechain EQ and expansion with floor and ceiling limits. Compared with Waves F6, it can work as a true linear-phase crossover compressor as well as a dynamic EQ, rather than a dynamic EQ only. It is also far deeper than wideband compressors like Pro-C 3 or TDR Kotelnikov, which can't treat one frequency range on its own.

Best for: transparent multiband compression and expansion in mastering, taming one problem frequency range, de-essing and transient work on buses, drums, guitars and vocals.
Genres: any; it is designed to be invisible rather than coloured.
Look elsewhere if: you want fast results on many mix channels (Pro-MB is quicker and lighter), a simple wideband compressor (Pro-C 3, The Glue), or analog colour (SSL G-Master Buss Compressor).
Tip: start from the presets to learn the layout, then save your own per-band presets so you can rebuild common setups quickly.

What producers say

Reviewers rate it among the most capable multiband processors, with a steep learning curve and high CPU use as the trade-offs.

Sound On Sound (Sam Inglis, July 2019) praised its "very clean, transparent sound", its range from multiband compression to de-essing, and its programme-dependent release, but found it less intuitive than Pro-MB and noted that new bands start inactive.
MusicRadar (2019) said it "sets a new gold standard for dynamics processing" and called the mix of multiband compression and dynamic EQ "liberating".
Criticisms: a steep learning curve, high CPU use that rules it out for every channel, and Sidechain and Advanced panels that can't be open at the same time.
