What it does

Essence is DMG Audio's "powerful and transparent De-Esser", built as a flexible sub-band processor that can work on any frequency band of a single vocal or a full mix. DMG aimed for a quick, simple interface on top of deep controls, scaling from zero-latency, low-CPU use for post work to linear-phase, oversampled processing for mastering.

KVR lists version 1.17.

When to use it

Essence is the better pick when de-essing needs to be surgical or has to work on a full mix. Compared with FabFilter Pro-DS it gives far more control over detection, sidechain filtering and the processed band, but it is slower to set up on a single vocal. It is closest to Sonnox Oxford SuprEsser as a detailed band processor, and adds linear-phase or zero-latency crossovers, M/S processing and upward expansion. Next to Waves Sibilance, which is quick and largely automatic, Essence asks more of you but can also work as a dynamic EQ on kicks, basses and master buses.

What producers say
