What it does

OPL is discoDSP's emulation of the Yamaha FM chips used in AdLib and Sound Blaster sound cards. It started as an OPL2 (YM3812) emulation and version 3.0 moves the engine to the YMF262 (OPL3), with the developer promising "16x oversampling for alias-free sound".

Version 3.0 (August 2026) was a free update for existing users. The demo disables audio output during offline rendering.

When to use it

OPL is the pick when you want the exact grit of a 1990s PC sound card rather than general-purpose FM. Compared with Vital or Serum 2, which can do FM between wavetable oscillators, it is far more limited, with two operators and fixed chip waveforms, but that limit is the sound. Unlike four- and six-operator FM synths such as FM8, it won't give you DX-style electric pianos or complex evolving patches. A KVR reviewer found its patches close to a Sound Blaster Pro once a bitcrusher and some noise are added. It is also one of the cheaper synths around.

What producers say

Users like its authenticity, value and support, while noting that two-operator FM is a deliberately narrow tool.
