What it does
Dert is a free one-knob distortion from Decomposer, the developer of the Sitala drum sampler. Instead of a drive control for a single algorithm, its one knob moves through four kinds of distortion, so the character changes as you turn it; the developer promises "no wrong way to set it."
- One knob: the only control. Overdrive, distortion, bitcrush and ring mod are laid out in that order across its range.
- Crossfading types: neighbouring effect types blend into each other as you turn, so there are no hard steps between flavours.
- Overdrive and distortion: the lower part of the sweep, for warmth, crunch and heavier saturation.
- Bitcrush and ring mod: further up the range, for lo-fi digital grit and metallic, clangy tones.
- Built for drums: designed with drums in mind and a natural partner for Sitala, though it also works on bass, vocals and synth pads.
Version 1.0.0 was released on 28 August 2026. It is free.

When to use it
Dert is the pick when you want four flavours of dirt without making a single decision beyond how far to turn one knob. Compared with Saturn 2 or Trash, it gives up separate drive, tone, mix and algorithm controls, so it is much less precise but far quicker to use. It covers some of the bitcrush ground of Decimort 2 and adds ring mod on the same knob, but without Decimort's control over sample rate and bit depth. Unlike Devil-Loc Deluxe, which also keeps things simple, it moves through several distortion types rather than one crushing character, and it costs nothing.
- Best for: fast grit on snares, drum loops and full kits, plus bass, vocals and pads.
- Genres: electronic, hip-hop, lo-fi and beat-making.
- Look elsewhere if: you want to set drive, tone and mix separately or choose a specific algorithm; Saturn 2 or Trash do much more.
- Tip: use a small amount to roughen a snare or loop, and automate the knob through a build or fill before a drop.
What producers say
Early coverage likes the simplicity and the way the character shifts across the knob, while noting the obvious lack of precision.
- Bedroom Producers Blog (2026) liked its simplicity and called it "handy if you enjoy minimal plugins" with several distortion flavours on one control.
- Uses: BPB found a little adds grit to a snare or loop, while more can make a whole kit sound "crushed and worn out."
- Criticisms: BPB pointed out that it is less precise than a distortion with separate drive, tone, mix and algorithm controls.
