GrandEQ is a seven-band mastering equalizer with minimum-phase and linear-phase algorithms designed to avoid digital artifacts.
It works in left-right or mid-side mode with linked or unlinked channels, for $139.
Best for: Mastering, Mix Bus. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: mastering, mid/side, minimum-phase, linear-phase, bus processing, CPU-light, mix bus, full mix, transparent, A/B compare, broad-strokes, minimal controls, oversampling, static, surgical.
What it does
GrandEQ is DDMF's mastering equalizer. The developer presents it as the result of everything learned since its first EQ in 2006, with the goal of cutting digital artefacts to get "an open and clear sound" at low CPU cost.
- Minimum Phase algorithm: filters matched in both magnitude and phase to analog targets, so curves behave like their analog models across the whole spectrum.
- Linear Phase algorithm: a forward-backward filtering approach with oversampling, for moves that leave phase untouched.
- Seven bands: seven independent bands, each set to bell, low shelf, high shelf, low cut, high cut, bandpass or notch.
- Stereo modes: work in left-right or mid-side, with the two channels linked or edited separately.
- A/B states: two internal states for quick comparison of settings.
- Two interfaces: a standard view and a minimal view with fewer visible controls.
KVR lists version 1.1.0. Free demos are available.
When to use it
GrandEQ is the pick when sound and phase behaviour matter more than features. Compared with FabFilter Pro-Q 4 and TDR Nova, it has far fewer bands and no dynamic EQ, but it gives a straight choice between analog-matched minimum phase and linear phase on every move. It is closer in spirit to Kirchhoff-EQ's focus on accurate filters, with a much smaller, simpler control set. Against DDMF's own IIEQPro, it trades 24 bands and 27 filter types for seven bands and a cleaner, mastering-oriented design, at more than three times the price.
- Best for: broad tonal shaping and mid-side moves on a master or mix bus, where you want few controls and no added artefacts.
- Genres: any; it is a transparent mastering tool.
- Look elsewhere if: you need dynamic EQ, many bands or a detailed analyzer; Pro-Q 4 or TDR Nova cover that, and IIEQPro is the cheaper DDMF choice for mixing.
- Tip: the one KVR reviewer found minimum phase mode avoids colour shifts on cuts, and used it on guitar, piano, synths and drums as well as masters.
What producers say
Feedback is sparse but very positive, centred on transparency in the top end.
- KVR users rate it 5 out of 5 from 1 review (version 1.01, 2023). The reviewer praised its clarity above 3 kHz, low CPU use and accurate phase handling.
- Comparison: the same reviewer tested it against FabFilter and MeldaProduction EQs and wrote "I don't have another EQ that beats the sound of this."
