Comprezzore is a flexible digital compressor with a drawable compression curve, feed-forward or feedback modes and a filtered sidechain.
It covers everything from transient shaping to heavy compression, with optional oversampling and wet/dry mix, for $79.
Best for: Vocals, Drums, Bass, Mix Bus, Mastering. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: built-in mix knob, sidechain input, digital, drums, feed-forward, feedback, oversampling, vocals, bus processing, full mix, mastering, metering, bass, external sidechain, heavy, mix bus, mixing, parallel processing, sample-rate reduction, single-band, stereo-linked, surgical.
What it does
Comprezzore is DDMF's digital compressor, "explicitly NOT modelled after any hardware". It replaced DDMF's older NYCompressor and is meant to complement its MagicDeathEye compressors, giving detailed control over the compression curve and timing.
- Drawable curve: draw the compression curve directly, with generalized ratio and threshold controls.
- Timing: attack from 0.01 to 1000 ms and release from 1 to 5000 ms, each with adjustable shapes, plus hold up to 500 ms.
- Time or dB mode: attack and release can work in time or in dB, which changes how the gain moves.
- Topology: feed-forward or feedback, with independent or linked stereo.
- Sidechain: low- and high-pass filters that can be soloed, plus an optional external sidechain input.
- Display: a moving history of input level and gain reduction, and custom VU meters with selectable colours.
- Extras: 2x or 4x oversampling with IIR or FIR downsampling filters, wet/dry mix, input and output gain of plus or minus 20 dB, presets and a PDF manual.
KVR lists version 1.1.8. Free demos are available.
When to use it
Comprezzore is for people who want to shape the compression itself rather than pick a hardware flavour. Compared with FabFilter Pro-C 3, it has fewer ready-made compression styles but lets you draw the curve and switch attack and release between time and dB. Compared with TDR Kotelnikov, which is built for transparent bus and mastering work, it gives more direct control over timing shapes, which also makes it useful for transient design. Unlike The Glue or the 1176 and LA-2A emulations, it adds no analog colour.
- Best for: precise control of vocals, drums and buses, parallel compression with the mix control, and shaping transients.
- Genres: any.
- Look elsewhere if: you want the character of a classic hardware unit; DDMF's MagicDeathEye, The Glue or an 1176 emulation suit that better.
