What it does
Emergence is a "real-time granular effect with multiple grain streams" from independent developer Daniel Gergely. It records incoming audio into a running buffer and plays it back as clouds of grains, for evolving textures, glitches and delays.
- Four grain streams: each stream has its own parameters, so you can layer up to 600 grains with different sizes, pitches and timing.
- Grain envelope: an ADSR envelope (attack, decay, sustain, release) shapes each grain, from soft swells to clicky fragments.
- Pitch: high-quality shifting of up to two octaves up or down per stream, for harmonies and chord-like layers.
- Freeze: hold a moment of audio indefinitely and keep transforming it with the stream controls.
- Modulation: LFOs, macros and audio-driven modulators, with tempo sync for time-based parameters.
- Randomisation: randomise the patch with per-parameter locks, so you can keep what works and roll the rest.
- Workflow: a preset manager with search, favourites and tags, over 70 factory presets, a resizable UI with collapsible sections and hover help.
The paid version (1.0.5) comes with a perpetual licence and free updates up to version 2.0. A free version (0.3.2) is also offered, but it lacks the ADSR, audio modulators, tempo sync, randomisation, preset manager and position knob.

When to use it
Emergence is the pick when you want a focused, cheap granular processor for live audio rather than a full effects rack. Compared with Graindad, it has no step sequencing or built-in effects chain, but its four pitched streams and freeze make it quicker for pads and harmonised textures, at a fraction of the price. Unlike Infiltrator 2 or Multipass, it does one thing, granular, and leaves filtering, distortion and reverb to other plugins. Against Lifeline Expanse, which leans on ready-made textures and lo-fi colour, Emergence gives more direct control over the grains themselves. The free version makes it easy to try the sound before paying.
- Best for: granular textures, frozen pads, harmonised clouds and glitchy delays from any audio.
- Genres: ambient, cinematic, experimental and electronic.
- Look elsewhere if: you want sequenced granular effects with more built-in processing (Graindad), or a granular sampler that plays from MIDI; Emergence processes incoming audio only.
- Tip: simple sources such as a piano loop work especially well; tune the four streams to different intervals for harmonic layers (CDM).
What producers say
Writers covering the free 0.3 beta found it a well-made, inspiring granular effect and raised no real criticisms.
- CDM (Peter Kirn, 2022) praised the quality of the pitch shifting, the "logically laid-out controls" and the grain display, and put version 0.3 in "the must-download category."
- Bedroom Producers Blog (2022) saw it as a tool for ambient soundscapes that can be "ethereal, gritty, glitchy," and for getting past creative blocks.
