Decimort 2
by D16 Group · Distortion · Bit crusher
vst3s Score 8.2/10 · rated #6 of 10 distortion
A high-quality bit crusher and sample-rate reducer that models the converters of classic samplers, including their anti-alias filters, jitter and dither.
It adds the grit of old drum machines and samplers without turning harsh.
Best for: Drums, Sound Design, Keys & Synths. Genres: Lo-Fi, Electronic & EDM, Hip-Hop & Trap.
Keywords: drums, sample-rate reduction, classic, hardware emulation, lo-fi, gritty, keys, resizable UI, vintage, bitcrush, CPU-light, crunchy, MIDI-controllable, mixing, oversampling, samples & loops, single-band, sound design, subtle, wobble.
What it does
Decimort 2 is D16's bit crusher and sample-rate reducer, modelled on the converters of classic Akai and E-MU samplers. D16 calls it "the highest quality low-quality effect".
- Converter modelling: emulates the colour of vintage AD/DA conversion with no unwanted internal aliasing.
- Approximative and Images filters: a steep pre-filter that removes harmonics above the new sample rate, and a post filter that controls the aliasing images.
- Jitter and dither: jitter randomly wobbles the resampling rate for extra harmonics; dither masks quantisation errors.
- Two quantisation methods: mid-riser and mid-tread, which respond differently to quiet signals.
- Extras: a resonant multimode filter, MIDI Learn and resizable HiDPI interface.
The current version is 2.3.2.

When to use it
Decimort 2 is the only dedicated bit crusher in the rated list. Saturn 2, COLDFIRE and Rift all include bit-crushing, but Decimort goes further on authentic sampler colour, with its filters and jitter giving the grit of old samplers rather than harsh digital fizz.
- Best for: making drums and loops sound like they came from an old sampler, lo-fi keys, and subtle crunch on busy parts.
- Genres: hip-hop, boom bap, lo-fi, house, techno and other sample-based music.
- Look elsewhere if: you want modulated or rhythmic crushing; it has no LFOs, so use automation or a modulating plugin such as COLDFIRE or Rift.
What producers say
Often called the definitive vintage sampler emulation in plugin form.
- Computer Music / MusicRadar (2016) called it "the definitive bitcrusher and sample rate reducer", with more authentic results than version 1.
- KVR users praise its authentic sampler character, low CPU use and the jitter control.
- Gripes: version 2 dropped version 1's separate left/right controls, and there are no LFOs.
