What it does

Slow Drift is "an ethereal texture generator" from Cradle's State Machine range, built from lo-fi digital oscillators, semi-modular analog synths and Eurorack VCOs. Its presets morph and blend two layers of these sources into pads, leads and evolving textures.

It launched in October 2023. A 14-day free trial is available.

When to use it

Slow Drift is a fast, low-cost way to get moving pads and textures with real analog and modular character, without patching anything. Compared with Omnisphere 3 it is a much smaller library with simpler editing, but it costs a fraction as much and its two-layer page is easy to learn. Unlike Pigments 7 or Phase Plant, it gives you shaping rather than deep modulation: the LFO cannot even modulate the layer balance. Its chord generator, scale quantizer and arpeggiator make it more of a writing tool than most preset synths at this price.

What producers say

Sound On Sound rated it highly as an easy, good-value instrument with a few limits.
