What it does

Shadow Structures is a State Machine instrument for dark and industrial techno, made with the techno producer Headless Horseman. Cradle pitches it as "an industrial grade tool kit for dark techno" full of metallic, mangled and warped textures.

Sounds: 200 production-ready presets built from 70 captured source sounds: metallic pads, warped synths, distorted atmospheres and stabs.
Two-layer engine: like the rest of the State Machine range, patches combine an A (Leader) and B (Follower) layer that can be shaped separately.
Synth controls: each State Machine layer has a source with Mono, Legato and Duo modes, a low- or high-pass filter with envelope, an amp envelope and a tempo-synced LFO.
Audio effects: tape emulation and Mid Driver drive modules for grit and saturation, alongside the rest of the effects chain.
MIDI effects: a built-in suite for adding subtle movement or ominous rhythmic motifs from simple input.

When to use it

Shadow Structures is a shortcut to one sound: dark, industrial techno textures that are ready to drop into a track. Compared with Phase Plant or Serum 2 it does far less, but those synths need time and skill to reach the same metallic, degraded results, while here they are the starting point. Next to Omnisphere 3 it is a narrow, low-cost palette rather than a huge library, and its producer-made presets are tighter in focus. Its tape and drive modules mean less need for extra saturation plugins on the channel.

Best for: industrial pads, drones, metallic stabs and distorted atmospheres.
Genres: dark techno, industrial techno and other dark electronic styles.
Look elsewhere if: you work outside dark electronic music or want full sound design; Phase Plant or Serum 2 give you that freedom.
