What it does

Playtime is a free instrument in Cradle's State Machine series, built from children's musical toys and playful timbres. Cradle describes it as "a box of toys to play like a kid", designed to encourage child-like creative freedom.

Sound sources: 20 sources, including toy piano, music box, glockenspiel, kalimba, ukulele, melodica, ocarina, a blown bottle, a string synth, harmonica-style sounds and assorted toy percussion.
Presets: 40 presets, with names such as Ice Palace, Bubble Sines, Pirate Orchestra, Strummed Ukulele, Wild Percussion and Hurdy Gurdy.
MIDI effects: an arpeggiator, a chord module, scale effects and glide, so single notes can turn into patterns and chords.
Audio effects: an EQ section, a bad-speaker effect for lo-fi texture, and reverb and delay.
Character: many presets lean towards retro game and fairy-tale moods rather than realistic instrument playing.

It is free.

When to use it

Playtime is a good free choice for toy-box and music-box colours that come with arps and chords built in. Compared with Spitfire's free LABS instruments, it is more focused on one theme and adds MIDI tools for instant patterns. Next to deep rated instruments like Trilian or the Arturia Augmented series it is a small sketchbook, not a playable, detailed instrument.

Best for: music-box melodies, toy-piano hooks, whimsical arpeggios and light, nostalgic layers.
Genres: lo-fi, pop, game music, and cinematic or children's media scoring.
Look elsewhere if: you need a realistic, deeply sampled acoustic instrument.
