What it does
Frutiger Aero is a preset-led State Machine instrument built around the glossy, optimistic sound of the early 2000s, which Cradle calls "the sound of the new millennium." It is aimed at quick, finished-sounding parts rather than synthesis from scratch.
- Presets: more than 200 mix-ready patches made from early-2000s sound sources: glassy plucks, bright keys, airy pads and leads.
- Two-layer engine: State Machine instruments stack two layers, A (Leader) and B (Follower), each with its own controls, so a patch can be rebalanced or reshaped part by part.
- Synth controls: in the State Machine engine each layer has a source with Mono, Legato and Duo modes, a low- or high-pass filter with its own envelope, an amp envelope and a tempo-synced LFO.
- Smart MIDI tools: scale and chord modes that lock progressions into key, plus an arpeggiator for simple hooks and moving patterns.
- Effects: a built-in chain of clear reverbs, clean delays and glossy modulation tuned to the Y2K sheen.
MusicTech reported it as new in February 2026. A 14-day free trial is available.
When to use it
Frutiger Aero is the pick when you want one specific, dated-on-purpose aesthetic, Windows Vista-era gloss and Y2K pop shine, ready in a few clicks. Compared with Omnisphere 3 or Pigments 7 it is tiny, with one style and a light two-layer editor, but it is far cheaper and quicker to get a usable part from. Unlike Serum 2 or Phase Plant, it is not a sound-design synth: you shape presets rather than build patches from oscillators. Its chord and scale tools also make it friendlier than those synths for producers who don't play keys well.
- Best for: glassy plucks, bright keys, shimmering pads and nostalgic hooks.
- Genres: nostalgic pop, electronic, ambient, game music and scoring.
- Look elsewhere if: you need a wide range of styles (Omnisphere 3, Pigments 7) or want to design sounds from scratch (Serum 2, Vital).
