What it does

Alt Textures is the State Machine instrument from Cradle voiced for heavy music: a sample-based synth of "atmospheric electronics built for the breakdown." Its presets come mainly from Jordan Fish, with contributions from Zakk Cervini, Mick Gordon and Noah Sebastian, and are built from sounds captured from analog hardware, digital engines and hybrid rigs.

It has a 14-day free trial.

When to use it

Alt Textures is the pick when you want finished synth sounds for metal and alternative mixes, voiced to cut through dense guitars without much extra processing. Compared with Omnisphere 3, it is a much smaller, single-genre library with a simpler two-layer engine, but it is cheaper and faster to get usable parts from. Unlike Serum 2 or Pigments 7, it is not meant for building sounds from scratch; you shape presets with macros and the five effects. Against general-purpose preset instruments like Output Arcade, its sounds lean darker and heavier.

What producers say

MusicTech found the sounds strong but the library narrow for its price.
