Keywords: tape, lo-fi, free, open source, wobble, hardware emulation, flutter, physical modelling, bus processing, mix bus, drums, full mix, linear-phase, built-in mix knob, mixing, oversampling, single-band, sound design, spacious, tempo-synced, thick, warm.

What it does

Chow Tape Model is Chowdhury DSP's "digital emulation of a reel-to-reel analog tape machine", built as a physical model. It began as a Stanford class project modelling a Sony TC-260 and led to a paper presented at DAFx 2019; it now covers a wide range of reel-to-reel machines.

Version 2.11.4 is free and open source under the GPLv3.

When to use it

Chow Tape Model is the pick if you want deep, hands-on tape physics at no cost. Compared with UA's Ampex ATR-102 or Waves Kramer Master Tape, it doesn't reproduce one named studio machine, but it exposes far more of the tape process, from bias to head gap. Its Degrade, Chew and wow/flutter sections cover much of the worn-tape side of RC-20 Retro Color, though RC-20 adds noise, vinyl and other lo-fi modules in one quick interface. Next to Decapitator it is slower to dial in but more specifically tape-like.

What producers say

Users treat it as one of the best free saturators, often good enough to replace paid tape plugins.
