vst3s Score 8.2/10 · rated #9 of 9 orchestral & other instruments
An instrument plugin from the developer of Melodyne that plays real studio performances by more than 30 session musicians on guitar, bass, drums and percussion, adapted to your song's chords, tempo and groove.
Built on Celemony's DNA technology with no loops, MIDI or AI, it also offers ARA timeline integration in several DAWs; it is subscription-only.
Best for: Guitars, Bass, Drums. Genres: Pop, Rock & Indie, R&B & Soul, Jazz, Acoustic & Classical.
Keywords: subscription, guitar instrument, acoustic drums, musical, surgical.
What it does
Tonalic is Celemony's "musician by your side": recorded performances by world-class session players that the Tonalic Engine reshapes to follow your song's chords, key, tempo and feel.
- Real players: more than 30 session musicians, including Kenny Aronoff, Nate Mendel, Brent Mason and Sean Hurley, covering guitars, bass, drums and percussion across many genres.
- Tonalic Engine: based on Celemony's DNA technology, it adapts the original performances to your harmony; the content is royalty-free.
- Arranging tools: musical search, alternatives and additions, sets of matching performances and a groove function, with previews directly in your song.
- Studio edition: adds Drive, Ambience and Effects sound shaping, separate drum kit and cymbal control, and Melodyne-style Refine tools for note-level pitch, timing, dynamics and voice leading.
- ARA workflow: in Studio One Pro 7.2.3, Fender Studio Pro 8, Cubase and Nuendo 15.0.30, LUNA 3.0 and Waveform Pro 14.0.49 or later, Tonalics sit in the timeline like audio clips.
Tonalic arranger and Tonalic studio are sold by subscription, with monthly and yearly plans; a free Tonalic essential edition with limited guitar content goes to Melodyne 5 users.
When to use it
Unlike EZbass and Virtual Bassist, which generate bass parts from MIDI-driven sample libraries, and MODO BASS 2, which models a bass physically, Tonalic works from recorded performances by named players across guitar, bass and drums, so it suits songwriters who want believable full-band parts that follow a chord track rather than programming each instrument.
- Best for: songwriting and demo production, and adding realistic guitar, bass and drum parts to productions without hiring players.
- Genres: pop, rock, R&B, soul, funk, country and jazz-leaning styles.
- Look elsewhere if: you won't use a subscription, or need deep sound design or niche styles; reviewers found the sound-shaping options modest and the styles mostly mainstream.
- Standout: real studio performances that follow your chords, with Melodyne-style note editing in the studio edition.
What producers say
Reviewers and users are impressed by the realism and workflow, but the subscription-only model divides opinion.
- Sound On Sound (2026) John Walden said "the believability of the final performances is remarkable" and concluded it is "very, very good indeed."
- Steinberg forum users (2026) one studio subscriber said the players are "top notch studio musicians" and the recordings are great.
- Gripe: other Steinberg forum users (2026) disliked the subscription, one writing "I am definitely not getting a subscription"; another found Tonalic essential limited to one guitarist.
