Removes crackle using CEDAR's Split & Recombine algorithm, which separates crackle from wanted signal and then recombines them cleanly.
It is Emmy-winning, has a single control, and is cheap enough to keep on hand for vinyl and archive work.
Best for: Mastering, Sound Design. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: repair, single knob, film & game audio, beginner-friendly, cinematic, clean, corrective, live performance, mastering, minimal controls, polish, samples & loops, sound design, vintage.
What it does
Decrackle offers "Emmy® award winning decrackling for professional audio restoration," and CEDAR says it has been used on countless music recordings, movie soundtracks and vintage TV shows.
- Split & Recombine: splits the audio into a signal containing mainly crackle and one containing the wanted signal, removes the crackle, then recombines them.
- One control: a single control sets how much crackle is removed.
- Vinyl sampling: CEDAR aims it at DJs and producers for 'polishing' audio sampled from vinyl.
- Efficiency: efficient enough to run as many instances as you need.
Part of CEDAR's Icons range. It has a 14-day free trial.
When to use it
Pick CEDAR Decrackle for a low-cost, one-knob decrackler from the developer that invented the Split & Recombine approach. It does the same job as Waves X-Crackle and the decrackle tools in iZotope RX 12 and Acon Digital Restoration Suite 2.
- Best for: crackly vinyl and 78 transfers, film and TV soundtrack restoration, and cleaning samples taken from records.
- Genres: any, especially hip-hop and lo-fi producers sampling vinyl.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a full repair suite or visual spectral repair; RX 12 covers more.
- Standout: the Split & Recombine algorithm behind a single control.
What producers say
Reviewers found the single control more capable than it looks, though some post engineers stick with RX.
- Sound On Sound (2015): Hugh Robjohns noted it is "also helpful with other background grunge and buzzes," and that its single control proves "clever and powerful" after a few minutes.
- Gripe: Production Expert's Korey Pereira (2021) wrote that for decrackle and declick "I personally still prefer to use iZotope RX."
- Sound On Sound: CEDAR Studio 6 review (2015)
- Production Expert: How Does CEDAR Audio Studio 9 Compare Against iZotope RX?
