Parametr'EQ is a 7-band parametric EQ with filters designed after analog circuits, optional non-linear warmth and an output brickwall limiter.

It comes in mono/stereo, Stereo and Widening (mid/side) editions, from €69 (about $78.35).

What it does

Parametr'EQ is Blue Cat Audio's 7-band parametric EQ. It pairs digital precision and a WYSIWYG response display with optional analog-modelled non-linear behaviour on each band.

7 bands: up to +/-40 dB per band, with the effective gain range adjustable and a real-time frequency response display with zoom and measurement tools.
Analog-modelled filters: each band can add non-linear distortion modelled on analog behaviour, for warmth when wanted.
Three editions: Parametr'EQ (single channel), Stereo Parametr'EQ (separate left and right) and Widening Parametr'EQ (mid/side).
Zero latency: oversampling for fidelity at any sample rate without added latency.
Gain compensation: automatic level matching so EQ moves can be judged at equal loudness.
Output stage: a brickwall limiter and peak metering.
Control: smooth automation of every parameter, MIDI learn with custom CC mapping and response curves, and a skinnable interface with opacity control.

When to use it

Parametr'EQ is the better pick for fixed 7-band tone shaping with optional analog-style colour, and its Widening edition gives you a dedicated mid/side EQ. Compared with Pro-Q 4 it has fewer bands and no dynamic EQ, and its layout is more traditional. Unlike TDR Nova it has no dynamic bands, though it does add an output limiter and per-band non-linear warmth. It suits people who already use other Blue Cat plugins and like their interface.

Best for: everyday and mastering EQ, mid/side widening in the Widening edition, and narrow cuts such as hum removal.
Genres: any.
Look elsewhere if: you want dynamic EQ or unlimited bands; Pro-Q 4 or TDR Nova offer more.
Tip: in the Widening edition, a small high-shelf boost and a low cut on the Sides only opens up a mix without hollowing the centre (Sound On Sound).

What producers say

The one major review found it transparent and well suited to mastering, with the interface the main complaint.

Sound On Sound (2008, an earlier version) praised its transparent sound and very narrow bands for surgical work, saying M/S EQ can open a mix "without obvious artifacts".
Criticisms: SOS found the default skin's controls "too small and fiddly", missed drawing curves with the mouse, and felt the manual explained the virtual centre feature poorly.
